@KYRGYZ here is what I recommend for transmission coolers from Hayden, it's straight off their website, hope this helps:

As long as you get a Plate and Fin Style (more efficient) and not a Tube and Fin you'll be good :)

let's just say... she can hold her own...

Due to unforeseen medical emergency circumstances, I had to push Aya to the limit yesterday on the afternoon commute and get home as soon as possible... Hurried out of work, and Darted...(see what I did there? if you were in my position if ya don't laugh, you'd cry)

So, she purred, no issues with anything and she held up during the commute and higher than testing speeds. Parked her in the garage, ran through the door packed up the kiddos and wife and went to the hospital. (if you want more info, just PM me, everyone is fine and released from the hospital, or I wouldn't be here typing this right now, like I said if you were in my position if ya don't laugh at yourself, you'd cry), ending outside temp was 63*F, ending transmission temp was 137*F. Yes, you read that right. One Hundred Thirty Seven degrees Fahrenheit... let put that into perspective from out spread sheets, shall we?

Yesterday:
10/20/2014 - 15:08 - 64*F outside / 80*F transmission
10/20/2014 - 15:52 - 63*F outside / 137*F transmission

As seen above, there was 2 degree hotter difference (65* to 63*) but a 59 degree drop (196* to 137*) in transmission temps.

As seen above, there was a 4 degree hotter difference (67* to 63*) but a 55 degree drop (192* to 137*) in transmission temps.

For S&G's, here is a morning commute with the same ending 63*F outside temp:

A full 54 degree drop (191* to 137*) in transmission temps with the same outside temperature...

So with comparisons with historical data:
after one evening commute - average of 56 degree drop in transmission temperatures
after one morning commute - average of 75 degree drop in transmission temperatures
combined average drop of 65.5 degree cooler

I though it would have been nice to just see Aya's transmission hovering around 150* for the most part, but these drops are such a welcome surprise... :) Hope this helps everyone out (I know it was therapeutic for me to crunch numbers and just type meaningless auto stuff out to y'all right now, I hate our health-scare system, but that is a different time and place)... more data the better, and I will keep crunching numbers an adding them to my notebook each time I fire Aya up...

Very nice regarding the temps. My question have you looked up the viscosity of the transmission oil at different temperatures? I'm just thinking because they have such a wide range. I'm just wondering with such a drop in temps if there is some sort of engineered floor low temp that it shouldn't be operated on. just throwing it out there. I'm sure a quick piece of cardboard or what not would heat up the fluid. We both know how PA winters can be. there is talk of another polar vortex this year. all i know is that was miserable.

I wish car MFG's would share their reasoning. not really their research. even something as simple as:
We ran super cold Transmission fluid and found the following results....flying unicorns at 2000 rpms, 4 kleaf covers at 4500 rpms and kangaroos at 6k...
we recommend fluid not go below X temp.

just curious. Glad that everything is working. Thats one hell of a modification. with some pretty damn nice results.

@Bullfrog , I'm happy you mentioned that. Here is the specs from the SP-IV ATF fluid:

As far as low temps and what not with the fluid, I checked around and found some of the following quotes in regards to such a drastic drop of transmission fluid:
  • "normal shifting commences at 80°F ATF. The computer takes steps to get it there as quickly as possible."
  • "The main 100 % killer of an auto trans is heat. The cooler she can run the better and longer it will run. Heat breaks down the additives in atf/SP-IV."
  • "once that (heat/break-down of additives) happens clutches start to burn and you get a slipping trans. The transmission and its ATF+4/SP-IV love being that cool."
Tonight, (barring anymore trips to the ER for the family) I am going to go put on the oil drain panel from the Aero Plate since I did get such a drop from the transmission cooler. With PA winters, I rather have that on there and keep it all buttoned up. We did find that opening that panel with create more air flow and not a drop in MPG's either. So those that don't want to go a drastic measure (ie: Power-saws/Trans-Coolers) you can get a nice drop in temps with that free mod.

If transmission temps need to be raised, I can always add more AGS fins too... I was thinking that as well. I mean hell, with my trans-cooler set up and the AGS fins at a min, I could always set up the AGS like the following (as viewing from the front): (X = no fins / - = fins)

Proposed AGS Fin setup:
xxxx -----
xxxx -----
xxxx -----
----- -----

Where the X's are at is right where the new cooler sits so I can button up the rest of the AGS fins and still get great air-flow to the cooler and close off the rest, sorta an even trade off. I've thought a lot about too cold... we'll run it awhile like the current min AGS fin set up with the oil drain panel back on and go from there.

Hows your numbers looking there smokey?
I'll have to take a pic of the log book when I get out on my next break, but lets just say, we're still seeing 50-70 degree drops. I haven't put on the oil drain panel back on the aero-plate yet. But everything else is looking good. I am checking every other day with the drips/drops/pooling (hypochondriac mode, but I'm getting better.)

I am seeing much more improvement in drive-ability. This morning alone I have found that when merging from 83N to 581 I need to get over to the left lane as quick as possible, in the past, I would bog down since the trans temps were @ 170+... today 1-teens and she just took off from the on ramp. Auto shifting is like butter, the smoothest auto I have ever drove. My wife's old Sonata can't hold a candle to this and that has a power-tech variation in it.

My buddy with his 1.4t un-tuned Rallye keeps saying that mine is A LOT more peppier than before. No "racing" or "straight-line accelerations" lately (rain/weather), so we'll see one day...

Einstein summed it up best...

"Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater." - Einstein

More data for the data hungry masses!!! @abnoxiousorange , @Bullfrog , @EMount91 , @starscream5000 , @viperman96

10/13 through 10/16 this is the last data I have before the TransCooler installation:

(It should be noted that the AGS Fins/Oil Panel removal, @roadrace Spectrum Tune and @DeyemeRacing Firm Rear Motor Mount was installed 10/11)

Pre-TransCooler averages from when I started collecting data back from 08/06 till 10/16. These averages are roughly 2 months worth of data:

Post-TransCooler data collected from 10/19 till 10/25:

Standby for some torque app data...

Gotta love people who take the initiative to blaze a trail for the rest of us, mad props to you sir! I will definitely be adding a trans cooler to my dart by next summer to save my trans from this south Louisiana heat. Keep up the good work!

I can't believe a trans cooler is so cheap. What do you think you paid, all in? Really impressive project.
The Transmission Cooler itself was $59.99...

So far the running total project cost on Aya: $1762.39

@roadrace , there has been a dramatic change in shifting and performance. I have seen that the transmission doesn't "bog down" so to speak anymore when I am dropping it down from 6th to 4th when passing or going up a steep incline. I can hold 6th @ 35 MPH where before it would kick you out @ 40-41. Hills, I don't need to downshift as often as I used to, as 6th gear is really holding its own with holding speeds. Yes, there is an occasional downshift needed for traffic purposes, but nothing like "stock" off the lot slushbox feeling. The shifting is the smoothest I have ever felt in an auto-stick from an automatic. My wife's old Sonata with a power-tech variant was never as smooth as the this. Even before the install you could tell at the higher temps the transmission wasn't reacting like it would at the lower temps, to steal a quote from myself a few posts back:

I am seeing much more improvement in drive-ability. As far as performance aspect of it... last Thursday I was able to get with a straight line acceleration with my buddies 1.4T, good temps, no one in danger, no law breaking, no harm no foul in the state of PA... Well these iMessage screen shots speak for itself (Me = Blue / Buddy = Grey):

AGAIN, it needs to be noted that his 1.4T is un-tuned, manual w/ @DRP pressure pipes & @DRP Ultimate CAI. Aya's 2.0L Power-Tech w/ Injen Full-CAI (w/ Velocity Stack filter), @roadrace lightweight pulley & spectrum tune, Custom 2.25" exhaust (Thrush glass-pack in place of resonator out to Y-pipe to dual straight pipes), Autolite copper spark plugs, @DeyemeRacing Firm Rear Mount and Hayden TransCooler...

Aya, put up the good fight, but once the Turbo kicks in, it's all over. For Aya and myself to hold off a 1.4T un-tuned manual until the turbo kick's in is staying something... (The 2.0 has so much untapped potential as myself and others have always said)

I'm thinking (pipe dreaming) that it might be possible for Aya to hold a 5-8 PSI worth of boost as she sits with her power-tech temps. I've already maxed out as much as I could without the TransCooler, and the transmission is still performing with flying colors. With the TransCooler, it's just gravy. All, she would really need is that extra off the line to put her over the edge with the kick in the pants (torque) she needs. If she could hold 5-8 PSI through the automatic there is no reason she couldn't hold her own against others out their...

hope this helps @roadrace , sorry if I got a little long winded, I normally do...

@youngsmith53 did I hera "5-8 psi boost" maybe your next project? :D

but seriously, what are you planning to do with engine cooling? on my 2.0 it stays around 200-215, any idea how to lower it?

LMAO... 5-8 PSI on an 2.0 auto is pretty much a pipe dream (I would think :) ) I don't think I would/could be able to boost here on the East Coast and @roadrace out on the West Coast. Aya is my DD, I can't ship her out to the West Coast :-\

But in all honesty, with the torque app, (which I am still getting accustomed to) my engine temps I believe only topped out at 190*F in the morning commute and 201*F in the evening commute. As far as lowering the engine coolant temps, I really am hoping someone releases a heat extractor hood... I know InlineCarbon was working on one, but I don't know what the status is now.

As far as temps to look out for, the #1 killer of auto transmissions is heat. These newer engines are made to withstand/perform under a lot of heat, especially with the hotter the engine the more fuel efficient for the government. I wouldn't worry about the engine temps too much. If I were to worry about any temps, I would worry about the transmission temps...

inline carbon is taking pre orders, I believe today is the last day $700 shipped and modern performance released their hood a few weeks ago

I'm in Cali with 90-100F temp, driving in the traffic, heat just kills all power...
I know some people install AMG Mercedes superchargers without too much internal mods , maybe in a few years... but I'm getting SRT anyway, who cares right? LOL

@KYRGYZ

this is the hood I am waiting for, not the one they just released. I don't want an "intake" hood, that will do me little to no good with how the 2.0 engine bay is set up. This will be the best bet as well with combating heat out of the engine bay.

ditto, I do not need a vent, I need an extractor.

@youngsmith53 just received my rear mount from @DeyemeRacing and it's HUGE lol I didn't think it's that big haha and kinda stinky, opened it in my office and it was a mistake hahaha
