Hi everyone! I've recently purchased a 2015 Dodge Dart SXT and I had a few questions. I can tell many of you are experienced, and know your vehicle very well, so this would probably be the best place to get answers :) . I bought my Dart used, with 10,000km. Crisp, clean, and in excellent condition. This is my first standard car, so everything is a little new. So basically, after about 600km, I've started to notice (maybe It was always there, but I only noticed now) that when I'm shifting between the first 3 gears, I hear the gear box switching gears underneath the front seat. It's not "loud," but it's not low that people in the car can't hear it. In addition, I've noticed that It's become increasingly difficult to put the shifter in first gear. It's not overly resistant, but the other day I had a little panic when I put quite a bit of force, and it didn't budge. Is any of this normal? And should I contact and head over to the dealership to get this looked at immediately, or am I just overthinking everything?
ALSO, I was wondering if it was normal that when starting the car the rpms will jump to about 1600, and after about a minute or so, it will drop down to about 1000-900 rpms. This usually happens when the car hasn't been used over night, or after work.

I'd also like to note that, this being my first car, that I'm a little paranoid, and tend to fixate on every noise that the car makes.

Thank you, and pardon my ignorance! :p

Welcome to the board.

I'll leave the 6MT answers to those with the 6MT (In my past experience with manuals, what you describe sounds like you might want to get it looked at)

As far as the car running at a higher RPM then calming down. This is normal with most cars. Since the Dart runs hotter than just about every car I've ever owned or worked on, I suspect you'll notice this much more as the car is getting itself up to proper operating temps. You'll notice it more when it's colder out. As long as the rpm's come down to the normal levels after the car heats up to operating temps, this isn't an issue.

That's a little disappointing considering it's such a new car. I'd definitely like to get it checked sooner than later. I don't want the dealership pinning anything on me, especially since I've had the car for 2 weeks today :(
At least, the RPM's running a little high is normal lol

And thank you, the community around here seems to be really cool, so I thought it was about time for me to join!

@3Marsz the truth is that this 6spd is pretty notchy compared to others (very mechanical sounding and feeling) but being under warranty, go have it checked if it bothers you that much. There does seem to be a few members on here who have had clutch issues (lack of clutch pressure) and difficuly shifting was an early symptom. So no harm in having them take a look at it :)

Amazing! Thanks for the quick replies! I think I'll be swinging by the dealership then. So, pardon my ignorance again, but how does the dealership work? I have the gold warranty (I believe that is what it's called). Do I just walk in, let them know my concerns? Also, let's say they don't find any issues, would they charge me for the inspection? (I'm from Toronto, and I'm sure most dealerships are different, but any/all feedback is greatly appreciated).

Welcome and congrats. I have the 6MT and what you describe sounds normal to me based on my experience. The 6MT is loud and I too thought something was wrong when I first got mine. As far as shifting goes, If I ever had problem getting into first I would just let it roll a bit and try again or push down the clutch farther and it goes in fine (Though this rarely happens). Down the road I will probably get the CDV delete and maybe a transmission mount but it's perfectly acceptable the way it is now. By all means though if you still have the original 3YR/36MO warranty it can't hurt to have it looked it.

As stated above, the 6speed M/T is a very loud transmission. You say your gears are not "loud" but loud enough, well my third sounds like an old 4x4 when you manually link it into 4x4 mode. Lol it's stupid loud. Second is right behind it. In my garage I can hear first too.

So that issue is addressed, as for the 1st gear resistance, I have heard of this before. But unless it happens almost all the time, the dealer will more than likely debunk it as either normal, or they are not experiencing it. First explain a little more about it. Is it when you are completely stopped that you have this issue, or are you trying to go into first at a rolling speed? 5mph, 3mph, etc. While a lot of people will tell you never use first gear unless you are perfectly stopped, I use it any time below 5mph. Second gear is already bogged down enough at 8mph, and you need to really slip the clutch and give it gas if you're going much slower than 5, just to get it up to speed (around 8mph) before fulling letting the clutch go. I down shift, a lot. I may not be the best manual driver, but i really enjoy downshifting and have gotten pretty darn good at it. At those low speeds I can down shift perfectly into 1st, no jerkiness, no grinding, or any of that. I have heard of others not being able to use 1st at all unless they are stopped. Maybe it's something with their cars, but mine takes it just fine and is very smooth with it.

Tangent over, the reason I bring it up is because I do feel a resistance in 1st when slowing down. If I am coming up to a green light but i need to turn left, but still I need to come to a complete stop, I will put it in first while slowing down. I mean with the clutch fully depressed, and i DO NOT let it out while slowing down. When doing this (which really is not often) I can almost hear a whining noise as I push it into the gear. Again clutch fully depressed. It does push back on me during this, and I believe this is the synchro. Maybe i am screwing up my synchro when I do that. Whoops. Lol Good thing it's not often, but this was just an example of something I experience. Not sure if it's the same case or not.

I have had the issue where it just did not want to go into first (or reverse is more common)while completely stopped. This is still very rare and I am not sure what it is. If your case only happens very rarely, it might be similar to mine. Maybe the previous driver banged the gears a little too hard and grinded or wore out the synchros while driving hard...not that I would do anything like that...:rolleyes::rolleyes:

LOL I hope that's not the case with the previous driver  ahaha

You're 100% right, I wasn't specific enough. But you detailed it perfectly for me, so thank you! lol. So only once while I was at a complete stop, the stick literally didn't move, and because of the panic of being in the middle of traffic, I can't say whether the clutch was completely depressed when I was trying to shift. But exactly how you detailed it, It's difficult during those red-to-green moments when you're going at about 5-8 km's an hour, where I drop to 1st gear. I usually rev match, and there hasn't been a time where the car has jerked, or the rpms were passed 2500. But it is during those times where I find it's a little stiff. Usually there isn't a problem at stop signs, unless I shift the gear before coming to a complete stop.

So from what I understand, everything seems to be good. If any of the things mentioned above gets worse, I'll swing by the dealership, and post about the experience, maybe it can help the next person new to the Dart lol. I'm just a complete car noob, and this is literally the first standard I've owned (I've probably driven 10 hours of standard before owning this car). Also, It would seem like the Dodge Dart is a very peculiar and unique car, which probably doesn't help. But so far I'm loving the car, love the look, and tbh the drive isn't as bad as some people say. Took me about a week and a half to really adjust to the sweet spot on the clutch.

And thanks for all the speedy responses, appreciate all the feedback, and thank you for the welcome!!

Yep, loud trans.... normal. As with fanboy, I'll shift into first if I'm near 5mph, shifting into second at that speed doesn't seem to like it. I'll blip the rmp just slightly to Rev match. For me it's second that doesn't like to shift into. The other day I was coming down a side street and reved pretty high thinking I was in second, got the Mustang guys looking at me like wth. But best advance is warranty, if they turn you away and you know it's not good keep pressing them. Worst case is you'll have records of complaining about something if your warranty does run out. This way you might be able to still get it covered as an ongoing problem even if the dealer couldn't "replicate" the issue.

Sorry for the late reply!

Ya for sure. Thanks a lot, I'm definitely going to head over to the dealership sometime this week to have it looked at.
Another weird thing that I've noticed is, while I'm accelerating in third and fourth gear (between 1000-2000 RPMS), I hear a little whistle. It's not loud at all, it's barely audible, but I've read around, and there are people who say it may be an early warning of some issues with the gearbox/bearings. The weird thing is, as soon as I take my foot off the gas pedal, the whistle goes away.
Do you think this is normal, or I'm I just being paranoid? LOL
Thanks again!
