Data Logging the 2.0 Lots of stats

I started to data log using a elm327 OBD2 Bluetooth module and Torque on my android phone. This is the same route every day to and from work so the distance is the same and its the same road and i tried to keep the same times. What i originally was looking at is the collation to engine coolant temp and radiator fan/AGF usage to intake temperature before installed my Injen CAI. The weather in southwestern PA has been pretty steady temps this week. I wanted to start putting data out there of what a typical engine does, what are the stock values over the drive, what type of temps do we see, whats the effect of heat soak, how hot does it get sitting in traffic, etc... After i put my CAI on i will do another few days of logging to show if/how much difference in temperatures. The later graphs has more data such as altitude but i take the same way to and from work so those can be used across all graphs.

Couple things, i have an insulated garage, so the morning ambient temperature is the temp in the garage and takes a few for it to drop to the outside temp.

Note: i was running my INJEN as a SRI setup due to not having the isolator mounts, this was fixed after a trip to the hardware store and living so close to summit racing to have effectively next day delivery! CAI resuts will be on fridays data log.

Data was corrupt from drive home. after i got home i went to the hardware store and gas station. this following is a heat soaked engine and non highway driving with stop and starts.

After this week daily graphing is getting to be a chore so im thinking i may do one or 2 days a week. maybe a tuesday/thursday

I'm jealous of the low throttle positions you need to maintain speed when cruising. My 1.4 needs 23.9% measure from the OBD port the maintain 50 MPH, AND 27.1% to do about 60 MPH. Looks like the stock t-stat is around 197 degrees, which is typical in most NA cars. Looks like you IATs in the warm summer afternoon are only around 11 degrees above ambient during steady cruise. That's pretty comparable to my 2014 Durango R/T (9 degrees over ambient). My dart is about 35 degrees above ambient with only 2 AGS fins, lol.

Note about Wednesday morning: There was a traffic accident and i had to come to a full stop during what would be the highway part of the trip.



On flat runs or down hill there is a sweet spot of about 75 MPH that i barely have to touch the pedal to keep speed. I started adding altitude to the logging and found out that i do a bit of hill climbing even for a highway.

as for the IAT's its not to terribly bad but you can see a noticeable heat soak when the fan/AGF work. but then they stabilize once the fan kicks off.

The 2.0 runs pretty damn hot, i can only imagine what those snails run at! If your IAT is that high, does the power come from the volume of air then your pushing and negate the high temperature of it?

Do they not go to a inter cooler first? im trying to educate myself on turbos, i though it was compressed and then put through an inter cooler then into the engine.

Yes, that's pretty much how it works, the air gets sucked in through the intake, compressed by the turbo, sent to the intercooler though the "hot side" pipe, cooled, and then fed into the engine through the "cold side" pipe. However, the air-to-air front-mounted intercooler in the Dart (and any other car) is not 100% efficient at removing all of the heat the air absorbs by being compressed and passing so close to the ultra-hot exhaust. And after a while, the intercooler itself gets heat-soaked and becomes less efficient. A larger intercooler with more surface area and better airflow through the fins helps, but there are limits to what will fit between the engine radiator and the bumper, and air-to-air heat exchange isn't all that efficient anyway.

I tried to use dash command with my ELM327 and i could not get the program to connect with my nexus 4. my ELM is bluetooth though instead of wifi.

I would LOVE if someone else did this to compare notes, if anything its a pretty good baseline of heat buildup becasue PA is mostly all hills..

Reviewing the thursday afternoon errand trip, it would appear the ambient air temp is affected by heat soak as well. It most surely was not over 90 degrees yesterday here.

Very little traffic to work, also notice direct jump in temperatures when the rad kicks on to the intake temp its very noticeable in the 2nd graph showing air temps.

Hey no problem there is a range of data that can be logged. im logging to try to help confirm a CAI is indeed a CAI and trying a few things to bring the engine bay temps down. the Tourqe app can log damn near everything it seems.

And there you have it, a base load of what a 2.0 does on a 16 mile trip to work for 2 weeks with before and after benchmarks taken for a CAI. I hope everyone learned something and im very excited to see that in other threads people are starting to data log as well and i hope that they will start posting their graphs as well.

The "median" is the "middle" value in the list of numbers. The "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no number is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.

I love self answering questions. BUTT!!! that last post with the calculations, that all data manipulations via Calc in libreoffice (open source excel). The only thing torque gives is the .csv files that i have linked on the first post, the graphs and charts were all me sitting in front of the tv moving numbers.
