I understand the the UTQG ratings give you an idea on a tires performance.

But one thing I don't fully understand is a the threadwear and how it relates to performance.

Would a 300AA tire perform better than a 400AA tire? Since it has less treadwear and therefore wears out quicker, it is technically stickier? So it won't last as long, but it performs better during its life?

UTQG treadwear does not relate to performance, except that most real performance tires don't have great treadwear ratings. However, the performance design of the tire gives it poor treadwear, not the other way around. A tire can have poor treadwear and still have poor grip.

Ah ok, so they don't go hand in hand. I guess when looking for a tire use the stock tirewear and go from there.

What kind of tires are you looking to get? Summer only or All-Season?

For comparison sake, the stock GT tire is a Yokohama Avid S34 with a tire rating of 320 A A. They wore down fairly quickly, especially around the outside radius of the tire from cornering. I was very impressed with it's cornering ability in dry weather, but in rain and snow it was completely useless. They only lasted 20k miles.

I replaced them with General G-Max AS-05 with a tire rating of 500 AA A. It has more traction than the Yokohamas and a longer lasting tire rating. So far I have pushed the car into countless high speed corners with barely any tire wear, I'm quite surprised by the lack of wear to be honest. Winter traction was immensely improved over the Yokohamas, I had no fears of getting stuck last winter. I would expect at least 40k miles out of these tires with my driving style. They were only $100 apiece as well.

TireRack has a good amount of information about tires too. Last I read about it, the UTGB ratings are a very broad guideline that is often easily manipulated by manufacturers. If I saw two tires have a difference of 50 UTGB I would consider them to be the same or of negligible difference.
