I joke about being the crazy oil filter guy, but I do a lot of off the wall research in regards to oil filters and oil because they are the life blood of our engines and without proper filtration and proper oil care, what good is our engine? Well after some research and checking into filtration, I have finally compiled a list of compatible filters for the 2.0/2.4 NA engines. Yes there are that many filters that will work for our engines. Some offer higher capacity (big), some offer low cost (low cost), you get the idea. I have linked the products to their respective websites (or Amazon) to gain more information on the filter themselves... I'll just leave this here for anyone that is interested, enjoy.

The 2.0/2.4 NA Dart Oil Filter List (as of 07/20/2015)
AMSOIL - EA15K50, EAO17-EA (Big-Extra Capacity)
Bosch - D3334 Distance Plus; 3334 Premium; 72234WS Work-Shop, Bosch 3502 Premium Oil Filter (Big-Extra Capacity)
Fram - PH10060 Extra Guard, TG10060 Tough Guard, XG10060 Ultra Guard (small), PH10590 (Big-Extra Capacity), PH10575 (Big-Extra Capacity) TG10575 (Big-Extra Capacity Synthetic), XG10575 (Big-Extra Capacity Premium)
K&N - HP-1017 (white) / PS-1017 (Black), HP-2011 (White/Big-Extra Capacity), PS-2011 (Black/Big-Extra Capacity)
Mobil1 - M1-113 (small), M1-212 (High Efficiency/Big-Extra Capacity)
Mopar - 5047769AA (OEM), 5184231AA (Big-Extra Capacity / OEM)
NAPA - SFL 37060 (Silver), FIL 7060 (gold), PFL 47060 (platinum), FIL 7045 (Gold/Big-Extra Capacity), FIL 7502 (Gold/Big-Extra Capacity), FIL 47502 (Platinum/Big-Extra Capacity), FIL 47045 (Platinum/Big-Extra Capacity)
Purolator - PureONE PL12222 (small); PSL12222 (the syn pureOne); Purolator L12222 (low cost), PL22500 (Big-Extra Capacity), PSL22500 (Big-Extra Capacity Blue Syn), PBL12222 (Purolator BOSS)
Royal Purple - 10-48, 20-500 (Big-Extra Capacity)
WIX - 57060 (NAPA Gold), 57060xp (NAPA Plat), 57045 (NAPA Gold/Big-Extra Capacity), 57502XP (NAPA Platinum/Big-Extra Capacity), 57502 (NAPA Gold/Big-Extra Capacity), 57045XP (NAPA Gold/Big-Extra Capacity)

Some of these filters will say they are not compatible with the 2.0/2.4 Dodge Dart engine, but they are compatible. I've done my due diligence and pretty much researched the hell out of them. I am sure this list will grow in time, but for the time-being, here it is. I hope this helps and if you have any questions about the filters above, please don't hesitate to ask, I'm more than willing to help out when I can. If anyone has any other filters I missed let me know or feel free to comment below, I figured this would be more than beneficial to the community as a whole :)

EDIT: Yes, I know there are more out and about out there, but these are the big ones we always see out on the market or when we go out and shop for oil filters...
EDIT x2: Yes, I moved this to the maintenance section from my build thread to help out others that want to try different filters :)
EDIT x3: Updated the list to show the bigger/longer filters and removed filters that were too big in diameter, as discussed below.

I have removed the Motorcraft FL-820s, when I went to Advance Auto yesterday after work I checked out the filter itself... the threading was correct, but the diameter was too big to fit into the oil filter cavity of the 2.0/2.4 as seen here:

View attachment 48347

With that being said and keeping the diameter of the cavity in mind here are the proper "hardware specs" of a filter for the 2.0/2.4's:

Thread: M22x1.5
Height: N/A (you can go with a taller filter there is plenty of room there in the cavity)
Diameter: 2.95"-2.97" (basing this off of PL12222 & PFL 47060)

I will do some more research an update the list accordingly with my findings... What I am seeing is a 3" diameter filter will fit in the cavity. It might be snug, but it will fit.

EDIT: here are the specs of the incorrect Motorcraft FL-820s if you were wondering:
Thread: M22x1.5
Height: 3.72" (doesn't factor into issues)
Diameter: 3.78" (over .83" too big)

The advantage of these screw-on canister filters is that you can get bigger (at least taller, in this case) ones than OEM to improve filtration. That's just not an option for us 1.4T owners who have to use cartridge filters, which are also harder to find. They're not easier to replace, either, though I do find them less messy to remove.

Exactly!

Bigger filter = more surface area = less pressure drop and time in bypass.

Bigger filter = more oil capacity = longer OCIs.

Bigger filter = more filter media = more capacity to hold contaminants.

@jsblanch, yeah it sucks with your oil filter issues with the 1.4t :( , I know in talking with my buddy with his 1.4t he drives past a CDJR dealership every week and if they are on sale he will buy them out just to stock up on them since they are hard to find... then there is me with my growing pyramid of oil filters.

Edit: Here is a great post on Bob Is The Oil Guy on detailing the "bigger is better" when it comes oil filters...

Bigger is Better

In regards to the whole bigger is better... here is the largest capacity filter I was able to find to fit on the 2.0/2.4 platform:

Wix 57045 / NAPA Gold FIL 7045
Thread: M22x1.5
Diameter: 2.939"
Height: 4.828"
Displacement: 32.75 in/sq'd

Specs compared to others out on the market:

PureOne PL12222 (yellow) / PureOne PSL12222 (blue)
Height: 3.34" (1.488" shorter)
Displacement: 22.83 in/sq'd (9.92 in/sq'd less capacity)

NAPA PFL 47060 (Platinum) / Wix 57060XP
Height: 3.43" (1.398" shorter)
Displacement: 23.76 in/sq'd (8.99 in/sq'd less capacity)

Yes, I have one on order and will be picking one up from NAPA on my way home :)

My neighbor uses screw-on oil filters for his F250 SuperDuty's transmission fluid. I think he said it takes something like 5 gallons of fluid, and his modified and tuned 7.3L turbodiesel makes absurd amounts of power (the box for his air filter is larger than a Dart's engine, and he has dual 5-inch straight pipe exhaust, which is... not quiet) so he wants to make it last. I'm sure he'd appreciate your cooling project. :)

Updated the OP with 2 more compatible filters for the 2.0/2.4 Darts:

  • 57502XP (NAPA Platinum/Big-Extra Capacity)
  • 57502 (NAPA Gold/Big-Extra Capacity)
These were found after cross referencing the Purolator PureONE's PL22500/PSL22500 on Wix website. Here are the details on the filters:
