I have a 2013 Dodge Dart aero, I was going to replace the air filter when I noticed a quite-a-bit of oil in the airbox above the filter. Is that normal? I took a look at the oil level while I was there and it's almost to the add mark. I just got it back from the dealer from the p0299 code. Is the turbo failing? Should I take it back to the dealer to get fixed? I dont think it should be leaking oil like that. No mods have been done to this vehicle yet.
It's normal, for this engine. The stock oil seperator box on top of the engine doesn't do a good job of actually separting the oil and recycling it back into the engine. An oil catch can placed inline with the hose going to the intake pipe will fix that problem, and a second catch can for the backside hose that goes back into the intake should catch the majority of the missing oil as it's going back into the intake manifold through that hose and getting burned up in the combustion chamber.
there is a picture illustrating the set up you are describing? Two catch cans? I know there has been prior discussions about different brands of catch cans and where to put them.
I know of the thread you're talking about. I don't think it makes mention of using two cans at the same time. That thread talks more about which hose to put the catch on and catch the most oil more so than anything else. The best answer is to use two catch cans and collect ALL of the oil exiting the stock oil separator.
That's your set up? If it is can we get pictures of routing, brands, effectiveness? It seems a little annoying to be adding weight, I know it's not much, and not getting a performance gain.
It isn't my setup, yet. I only have one catch can right now on the car and that's beside the intake filter. Mine is a GReddy knockoff from eBay that I've modified with baffles (the stock can is hollow). Feel free to check out my build thread for pics of the catch can. Yes, that's where it all originates from, like any other car that has oil in the intake or the intake manifold. You'll need to keep the stock oil separator on because there's a big hole on the valve cover that receives some of the oil back into it.
Looks good, but the price is what throws me off... You get what you pay for. But you will probably need to get better hose for that setup!
Also, IMO since the darts dont push a ton of boost a catch can is really not that much of a necessity... At least that is what i have been told by people running 40+ psi on their setups... they say normally you'll need a catch can when you hit about 28-30 psi cause that when the blow-by gets really bad and a lot of oil vapor will get push past the piston rings and into the crankcase and back into the intake and turbo.
Please dont piss off starscream5000, he has been a large source of learning for the 1.4 engine. also if you are going to baffle a catch can Nadu's build thread i think has a good write up for it.
Here is what I did with my boost gauge line. Its off the T fitting that came with my gauge from MPx on the line behind the TB. I reinstalled this because my meth injection is using the port on my TB spacer. Even with a catch can I would do this. Just to be safe. Not sure if the catch can will catch everything. Plus this filter is cheap and extra peace of mind.
Yeah, luckily i went with the AEM boost gauge. It comes with a 5-map sensor so that a boost line is not necessary! All i had to do was get a tb spacer with a threaded port!
Damn, now Im on a kick to install a catch can. I sold the one I had to Dartcommander. I had it custom baffled and ready to go.
Now Im gonna have to dig into other threads to see what everyone is using. The one DRP sells is real similar to the ebay ones as far as design.
Tork one is way less but don't look very easy to empty, and no mention of baffling. Maybe I'll just go universal again and baffle it myself. The can don't matter, as long as you use 5/8" fittings.
Any restriction on that line to the intake will cause issues.
Yea that's the tork one. Looks nice. But don't look like it has a drain on it. Meaning I would have to remove it and dump it. Also No mention of baffling. I may go that way just to have something. I'm dinking with my car almost everyday anyway. Just gives another reason to stay vigilant and looking under the hood.
I installed a Jegs air oil seperator on the hose going to the intake and so far have not caught any oil and I removed the intake and it has no oil in it. As you can see there is another Jegs air oil seperator on the hose going to the intake manifold and that's where I'm catching the most oil.
Here's a picture after almost 1,000 miles

Thanks for the info and pics on the build! I took all your info in and have bought myself this air oil separator! Luckily i have some extra hose left over from my intake build and i hopefully wont have to buy more!
Also i have a quick question for you with this! Did you have to get different sized barbed fittings for the PVC to Intake manifold one? It doesnt look like you upped the hose size i just want to be sure i got the right size hose!
No need to get different size fittings for the intake manifold hose as its 3/8. But if you decide to put a seperator on the line to the intake you need 1/4 NPT 5/8 fittings.
yeah, im really not worried about the line to the intake, that doesnt seem to have too much oil moving through it. When i took off the DV i looked in the turbo and the pool of oil was insignificant. So after seeing how much you pulled from the PCV line i was like... yeah i think this will be a good idea. But again we will see how i feel after i install this one, cause if it works as well as your showing then i may get a catch can... but im really not sure just yet!
I found the ADD W1 can. Looks like I'll be adding that to the list once I replace my left front wheel hub when it ships. Damn stripped lug hole. Putting drilled n slotted rotors on too.
I ordered a couple of water/oil separators just now from harbor freight. I'm finally getting off my lazy butt and putting one on both the Dart and Durango. I was going to baffle the other catch can I have for the Durango, but I'm too lazy and these will bolt right up and will be ready to go. I bought a couple that have 1/2" NPT connections. Anything with a larger connection than that costs big money. These are rated for 140psi, so I'm not concerned about them leaking on the Dart, and Definitely not on the Durango.
So I went ahead and bought the jegs oil air separator... I got it on Thursday evening after work, and I was going out of town in the dart that weekend. I decided to install it before I left and here's what it looks like!
I drove right around 325miles this weekend, and as you can kinda see I definitely caught some oil trying to get through into the intake manifold!
Thank you to everyone who steered me onto the right track!

I can't wait to get mine. Mine will be bigger, so finding an appropriate mounting point where it's a little cooler for the oil to condense better may end up being tricky. I already have a perfect spot picked out on the Durango though!
i also like how you keep your engine clean, looks very nice
