Im replacing my head gasket. I bought a Haynes Manuel for my 2.0 and the book says it is a 4 stage sequence but it says stage 1 is 22 ft pounds
Stage 2 is 54 ft pounds
Stage 3 is 54 ft pounds
Stage 4 is turn 90 degrees.

Stage 3 has to be a misprint right ? Tourqing to 54 twice makes no sense at all . Or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

Be sure to replace the filter screen in the oil channel in the block. The intake manifold should be installed on the head before putting the head on the block. Torquing the head bolts to 54 ft. lbs. twice is correct, it's not a misprint.
Install the ten cylinder head bolts finger tight.
Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown, following this 4 step torque plus angle method. Tighten according to the following torque values:
  • Step 1: All to 30 N·m (22 ft. lbs.)
  • Step 2: All to 73 N·m (54 ft. lbs.)
  • Step 3: All again to 73 N·m (54 ft. lbs.)
  • Step 4: All an additional 90° Turn Do not use a torque wrench for this step.
