News | Dodge recalls vacuum tubes ?*no, not that kind

allpar said:
130,000 2013-14 Dodge Darts sold worldwide to inspect and possibly replace vacuum hoses (“vacuum tubes” in their words) on cars with 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines. The 1.4-powered cars are not affected.

The vacuum hose routing may have been incorrect, resulting in oil migration that could cause hard pedal feel and longer stopping in emergencies; oil can degrade the brake booster diaphragm over time.

A tell-tale may be a popping noise, a hissing sound, or hard brake pedal feel. Any customers experiencing this should contact their dealer immediately. The service is done at no cost.

There have been seven accidents resulting in two minor injuries that might be related to this problem. If oil is found in the vacuum hose, dealers will replace the pump, brake booster, and master cylinder. Owners can call 1-800-853-1403 for information.

that's why you do the oil changes at home :)

my main question about the recall is this... can we find out what VINs are effected? Me personally have never had issues with the brakes on the Dart, I've found them to be the best OEM brakes in a long time and they are only at 22,2xx miles. I haven't felt the brake pedal issues, but watch me go to work tomorrow and there it is... lol

Hi Josh16:

FCA Canada announced a safety recall on certain 2013 and 2014 model year (PF) Dodge Dart vehicles equipped with a 2.0L or 2.4L Tigershark engine.

If your vehicle is involved in a future recall campaign, you will be notified by mail.

Hope this helps,

Looking at my brake booster vacuum hose I don't see where there is a problem. I guess they want to reroute it so that it goes under rather than over everything, so that oil can't pool up inside the booster?

It's just amazing how the slightest engineering change can have massive unintended consequences. GM went though all that grief with their ignition switches simply because of a simple plunger and spring that wasn't beefy enough.

My car has this problem. Brake system completely failed out of nowhere. Pedal got extremely hard to push. Took everything I had to depress it just a little.

Happened 3 months ago. I was leaving my house, pulled out i to the street. Got to the light 500 yards away and couldn't stop.

Luckily my dealer is literally on the other side of that light...520 yards from my house.

I coasted through the light, into the dealer lot, and right into the service bay (which thankfully is at the top of a big ramp that slowed me down)

I couldn't haven't been happier with how this was handled.

Within 10 minutes they knew this was a part failure covered under warranty. They didn't know what it was exactly but they knew something broke and that it would be a warranty repair.

They had Enterprise picking me up within 15 minutes of limping into the service bay. They gave me a rental Cherokee for a week while they fixed my car. It was absolutely hassle free. The car has worked great since. I didn't even have to return the rental. The dealership took it from me and handled the return.

The only negative is that the rental Cherokee was crap. It stalled on me three times at stop lights and was REALLY hard to restart. Took 5 minutes of sitting at a green light one time. Enterprise didn't seem to care. But Dodge did. They said they wouldn't give the car back to Enterprise until they fixed that one too.

Ditto. Similar thing happened to me back in September this year. Drove home from work, parked car in garage, hour later wife goes to leave and brake failure pulling out of the garage. Took about 15 days to complete fixes, mostly waiting on parts. Posted WO in this thread. Wonder then if the parts in this recall were taken care of when the repair work was done... probably not.

My VIN is also not showing up anything in the site to check linked earlier.

Side note -- also got a rental thru Enterprise, though it was a near base '16 Dart. Never would've thought the leather-wrapped steering wheel in my Rallye would make such a difference in daily driving, did NOT like the base wheel feel.

I still can't find my car listed under their recall, but I think I can see what they are talking about. In the picture shown of a later Dart I have an arrow pointed at the vacuum hose that goes to the brake booster. Note how it makes an immediate U-turn upwards then back down again. On my Dart the hose merely turns 90 degrees out of the head and goes back to the booster without making the vertical U-turn, which could allow residual oil to seep back towards the brake booster. If a Dodge mechanic is reading this and says I'm off-base then please speak up, otherwise I assume this is what they are talking about.

So with this recall announced as R63 last month, has anybody seen or had a dealer verify that this is for real yet? My 2013 SXT is a March 2013 build which puts it under the blanket of affected models. What I find interesting is when I put in the vin at the FCA / MoPar recall check site, it comes back as "No Outstanding Recalls or Customer Satisfaction Notifications Exist". Seems like we should see some info on this recall by now I would think.

Of course my dealer is not fully aware of the recall yet they say. They seem to follow what they see on the VIN check in-house. But I was able to find a complete bulletin online for this recall and many others.

So I have had the first symptom, the "pop" and air hiss occur once, ironically on the day the recall was announced. So far the brakes continue to work, but I'm certain it's only a matter of time until I get the hard pedal..

Supposedly only the 2.4L engines are affected. I checked with a Dodge dealer last week, and my car still doesn't have any recalls listed even though my car was built during the time the affected vehicles were made. I was told that if it gets added to the recall that 'd get a notice in the mail, but I'm concerned that my brake booster will serve notice first.

That's interesting that a dealer indicated only the 2.4L engines. I found the attached document online that looks like they are still looking at both the 2.0L and 2.4L engines. But I still don't get any hit on my VIN when entered into the recall site. It may too soon yet. View attachment 57972
The good news is that the dealer can be as clueless as the want regarding the affected engines, the recall will be issued by specific VIN. I don't know that they have actually issued a recall yet, and even if they have, your car may not be affected. I don't believe it's all 2013 2.0/2.4s that are involved.
