Hey all,
Wanted to update you guys on the situation with spark plugs, gapping and replacment for the 2.4.
According to our manual the 2.4 takes a .047 gap factory spec, so here's the thing based upon some info from @youngsmith53 and a few other members who have changed to auto lite copper core plugs and noticed a lot of difference in performance, I wanted to investigate.
For some reason unknown to me or the shop I goto autolite lists the 2.0 and 2.4 plugs as being different, why no one can seem to figure out because the 2.0 and 2.4 plugs are the identical part from MOPAR gapped wider for the 2.4. This seemed to make no sense to me because you really aren't supposed to regap iridium plugs, you can if you are careful with pliers but it is still risky to even measure the brittle tip from what I understand.
This got me thinking, do the 2.4 plugs come from the factory gapped to manuals spec? In the case of my car the answer is a resounding NO. My mopar plugs were gapped to .041-.043.
This brings me to my next thougt is the reason the car runs smoother, which I admit mine seems to have improved with more responsive throttle and a smoother idle using Autolite coppers, due to poor factory gapping and NOT the type of plug?
At the recommendation of my tech we went with a .045 gap, probably due to me running a lot of WOT... As I understand it for normal driving a larger gap is ideal, for more WOT frequent users a slightly smaller gap is better. That being said I'm sure that's a broad over generalization.
So what's the thought on all this? Mis labeled plugs from auto lite, poor factory gap? Seems stupid...
