When I arrived home today the shifter (automatic) will not disengage from Drive. Shifter will move all the way up to park but indicator and transmission stay in drive. What do I need to look at first before having it towed?

Shifter bushing under the hood has popped off. There is a recall about this. Parts are not yet available.

It's my understanding that letters have not gone out yet, tho FCA says the recall will begin "2nd qtr 2019" which is now. Dealership told me they don't know exactly which parts FCA will be sending them or how the fix will be done.
I know on mine, the cable end has about a 20 degree 'twist' in it, meaning I have to rotate it a little toward the front of the car to get it to engage the pivot point on the transmission shift lever. Once snapped in to place, that twist or torque is still there, making the cable 'want' to pop off the pivot. Imo, if that isn't fixed, premature wear of that bushing will continue.
That cable end should naturally lay parallel with the flat part of shift lever.

I have tried to install the Dorman 14055 bushing but could not get it to go into the bore of the cable end. The vehicle is 'down' until I figure out how to get it installed without tearing half the driverside stuff out of the engine compartment.

Does it make a difference which way you attempt to install the bushing into the cable end?
I've been trying to put the bushing (cable still on the car) from the top side of the cable end and have been unable to force it into the opening.Tried with all varieties of pliers and it just won't go.
My arm is pretty chewed up right now (I'm on blood thinners) so I have to take a break from all the sharp edges, but if it is supposed to be installed from the underside I'd sure like to know before I try again. I'm using Dorman # 14055 bushing.
Also, that package comes with 2 bushings. A white one with a flange on one side and another amber colored one that is the same on both sides. Has anyone used the white one?
