Anybody have experience with a Jeep Patriot with the 6-speed auto?

I am looking at replacing my Dart through arbitration (DCCT was replaced before I bought it without my knowledge and has gone out 2 times on me since) and now that the Patriot and Compass 4X4's are available without the CVT transmission, I am interested in checking them out. Great gas mileage for a 4X4, and while the 6-speed auto does not have a transfer case, there are lots of videos of it easily handling rocky dirt roads, mud, and snow. I had a Subaru Forester and the Jeep Patriot seems at least as capable. I followed one on the freeway for awhile and the suspension seems very well designed for DD. The transmission is a slight variation of the one found on the Dart 2.4 and the engine is the same, minus the Multi-air (173 hp). Amazingly, it weighs practically the same as a Dart Limited. Not going to be doing a first model year car ever again...

Edit-I am seeing both of them new, Patriot and Compass, for under $20,000...

As far as the Patriot @Pretty Boy Floyd ... the only experience I have with one is from my buddy who had a rental when he was getting his turbo replaced on his 1.4t. I drove in it a few times and the auto CVT)( was clunky and not very "engaging" so to speak. The power was "meh", even though the weight was comparable to the Dart, it wasn't much "fun", just did it job. The MPG's weren't good like you would expect either, he was still filling up more often then he had to on the 1.4t. He had it (Patriot) for about 6 weeks or so before get got his Dart back, and he couldn't wait to get back into his turbo...

Needless to say, in my opinion, do your due diligence and research the hell out of your next vehicle... (which I am sure you will) just don't jump into the next thing willy nilly... (and no that isn't a knock on anyone, I just hate reading too many horror story's about "I got this car, and now I hate *insert everything about it here*")

EDIT: Confirmation, he had the CVT, not the 6-speed auto. @Pretty Boy Floyd ... the 6-speed auto is the 6-speed Hyundai 6F24 automatic which is the exact same auto in the 2.0/2.4 Darts...

Haven't had any experience with the 6spd; we had the CVT in ours. It was one of the vehicles we were looking at getting back into when Jace was declared a total-loss. We went to go test drive one that was in our price-range at the time, and it was beat to the ground.

They're nice little vehicles, tbh. Check out http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/, the header image is our Jeep (which was a base model sport 2L with the cvt & fwd) We accidentally jumped the little thing on one of those off-roading trips, handled it like a champ. There are a few mods out there to make it more off-road worthy too.

I'd go for it, if not a Renegade since those are out now. -- Which makes me wonder, can a Dealer pull inventory from CarMax? (I know CarMax sells new cars too, like Renegade)

Good info! I looked at the Renegade's price, as well as the Cherokee, and really don't want to spend more than we paid for the Dart (under $20K). My last 4X4 truck was getting 10 mpg city and 14 mpg hwy, after I was done beefing it up, and so I really like the upper-20 mpgs I keep reading about people managing out of their Patriot 6-speed autos.

I am used to the AWD scene as I drove that Subaru for 3 years. Not perfect, but doable for our family trips to the wilderness. I really did not like offroading the manual in the Subie much because the engine was always bogging down on inclines. Now we have a German Shepherd that goes with us too, but somehow we even manage to get the four of us and her too in the Dart. lol

I saw a new white Compass on the road today and it looked pretty nice too. I mean really, for having the Jeep name neither the Patriot or the Compass can live up to the old Willy's WWII legacy (but then again which other 4X4 does?) so does it really matter if it "looks" like a Jeep? I think the Compass even comes standard with automatic windows. Or maybe I am wrong and a Jeep is only really a Jeep if it has crank windows? I am glad they make the CVT versions for "serious" offroading, but I can't afford the serious rig (or the gas) that I would want right now anyway.

Compass isn't bad either. Just keep in mind these are the last of MK's. They're both essentially the same vehicle inside, as a Caliber; just with different bodies. As I said, before Renegade, I'd be looking at a Patriot myself, as I like my square Jeeps. lol

We don't use 4wd as much as we thought we would, so we don't have a use for it. If you drive right, you won't need it either, with very few exceptions. lol

Thanks. Chrysler is a stand-up company so I'm sure I will get into something pretty nice and new, somehow.

Had both as rentals in Vegas. Both came across as "disposable" vehicles.

Read that the interiors of both have since been updated, but, if I were shopping for a small SUV, neither would crack my top 10 to test drive.

The Dart isn't an overly refined vehicle, but I still bet you will find the ride and drive of those two SUV's as "cheap".

Done a lot of research now and disposable is not how I see owners classifying them... YT seems to put them in a good light too as to regular offroading, with even some rock crawling in the CVT-equipped FII models.
