The difference between Dodge & Jeep is "offroad". Regardless of whether they will ever go there, they need to be able to take a bit of a beating. That means the interiors are easy to maintain, and things like that. So yeah, they come off as "cheap" but, in the end, you'll end up with a very capable vehicle. Especially for what came out in the Daimler-pillaging era of Chrysler.

we even put a v8 in it lol -- just google "suzq044 patriot" and see more pics of what we'd done with ours.

Just throwing my experience out there. I also understand that you may be limited (or have more negotiating power) to a FCA product in arbitration. My earlier days on jeepforums.com didn't yield many positive owner reviews.

I don't think either is a bad car. Very few cars on the market now are "bad". I just don't either compares well against any of the competition.

I actually owned a 2009 compass with the CVT.
Terrible for little things going wrong.

At under 50K I had my front suspension replaced.... struts, ball joints and tie rod ends. Also, there are transmission issues with the engine going idle when turning. Not sure on the year of the transmission issues, or types.... Make sure that you visit Compass and Patriot forums before seriously putting money into these. I wouldn't buy another "cheap" jeep again. I'd look at the new Cherokee and spend the little extra to get something that is less likely to be in the shop.

Just my advice. Also, ask if the struts and front end suspension is the same from the 2009 - 2015 models....

Ball joints, tie rods, etc., are the Achilles heel of these vehicles from what I read. Still, that's my favorite repair to do to any of my vehicles. The Jeep ones are supposed to be inexpensive too. The $10,000-$20,000 that I save over the competitors will pay for a lot of routine maintenance. Plus, the gas mileage is unsurpassed for this class. When I had my Cherokee people used to say it was a "pretend" Jeep too, not so much after I made it up "The River of No Return" in Ocotillo... LOL

Hah, you'll recognize where we took some of the pics then. Ocotillo was one of the 3 trips we took off-road with the lil guy before it got repo'd (when the bottom dropped out of the economy & we both lost our jobs). I think you'll have fun in the Patriot. If I had my choice, I'd try & get the High Altitude models, or if you can find one, a Freedom edition; all with the FD2 4wd, of course.

Your picture of blasting up the river (looks like The River of No Return?) in your Jeep is my new homescreen!

Hah; wasn't a river, just a big puddle. That was at Joshua Tree in their little "4x4 Only" area. We went anyway. They'd just had a massive storm (which we drove through to get there), and played in the mud a bit. Luckily our FWD butts didn't get stuck. lol

Nice! Me and my dog Tex were originally trapped by the swamp at Ocotillo after we went out to see a great meteor shower back in about 2000. I was thinking the Joshua Trees were out of place, but I have not been back to that particular spot since one last time also in 2000.

It was replaced before I bought it new, but I was not told. So yes, you could say it has been acting up X 3.
