The only concern I have is that this will force us to own an Android or iOS phone whether we would want to or not. I have an HTC One M8 for Windows and prefer that OS over the others. I would not want to have to buy a phone based upon the car I own. Otherwise, good on them and it stinks that once again, Microsoft is behind in the game although they started the game long before the other two players even entered in.

Windows Phone might as well die...its never going to be a major player in the mobile phone space, ever! Its screwed off way too long while Android and iOS pulled way out with both of their ecosystems. You can thank Steve Ballmer for that!

This doesn't force you to do anything and you can still buy whatever phone and whatever car you want. Why would any car maker care about Windows Phone anyway? Its market share is only 1.7% and not likely to grow, despite Microsoft's insane claims to the contrary. Android and iOS combined make up about 97% of the total market share of mobile phones.

EDIT: Also of importance is the fact that it is because of Microsoft themselves that there is nothing like Carplay and Android Auto for Windows Phone. They've never actually completed any such system for car makers to use.

First you say I can buy whatever I want. Then you say why should the auto manufacturer care about whether I can use my phone on their car or not. So, which is it? Oh, and who cares about whether something is to your liking or not, it does not change what I said in the least.

Which does not change anything I said nor the concern that I have. Sorry but, I would hate going in to buy a car and they say, sorry, you cannot use your phone, only Android 6 or iOS 8 or above can be used. Tough luck.

Let me rephrase, nobody is forcing you to buy anything in particular from what is currently available in the market. Nothing I said is inconsistent. Whether Windows Phone is to my personal liking (or yours) is completely irrelevant to the conversation of whether automakers car to adopt anything. The reality is that Windows Phone commands a tiny market share in the mobile phone arena, and Microsoft has announced and abandoned at least one previous "Windows in the Car" project. Car makers don't care one bit about any individual person's preferences. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are no-brainers for them. The market shares for those devices are huge, and not offering them is going to become a big competitive disadvantage. Once Microsoft gets their act together and releases their own version of automotive integration technology for their phones, car makers will have to decide whether it is worth the cost of integrating it into their systems. It's really up to Microsoft to make it easy and a net benefit to do so.

As far as compatibility goes, it looks like the ball is in Microsoft's court at this point. They were supposed to roll out a system like this back in 2014, but they apparently abandoned it at some point after showing it off and have restarted from scratch, but at this point they're being vague about it. That "Windows in the Car" system looked pretty good, too. Honestly, this is the way to go with infotainment systems, because having all the functionality hard-coded into the car's device effectively guarantees rapid functional obsolescence, long before the car has reached its end of life (10+ years these days, in many cases). My Uconnect is going to look pretty quaint if I still have my 2013 Dart in 2023, which I certainly hope to.

None of these things have anything to do with the concern I have, though. Oh well, I guess folks will be bitching when the IPhone 7 does not work with the 2019 whatever car because it only comes with Android Auto. Oh, and did we tell you, only the Samsung Galaxy phones will work with our implementation of Android Auto? I do not expect you all to get it from the response I have seen so far so let me just get this in early for you if what I have predicted happens: HAHA! Nelson pointing at you.
