      Front End Clunk Sound

Tired of it. Since day 1 the front end has made a clunk sound kind of like a real old car, that, when you go over a rough road or potholes it sort of sounds like your usual "thud" but IMMEDIATELY followed by a "very small clunk". But I'm just trying to convey the essence of the sound here; it does not sound like a really old car.

A few years ago I had the dealer repair the front struts as they were not seated properly and were creaking. They solved that and it has never returned. But this clunk sound has me bent out of shape. I, honestly, thought it was because of the 17" wheels and low profile tires. I thought every fool with this kind of setup is listening to awful road noise because of it.

Found out different yesterday when we bought a new car for the wife, with 18" wheels and low profile Yokos. Rides like a Cadillac with no noise. So, my dumbass just accepted the fact and never brought it up under warranty. It's stupid. I have to live with this shit now as trying to resolve it out of warranty will be cost prohibitive.

It could be anything from struts, brakes, motor mounts etc.

Does anyone elses Dart have some extra noise over bumps or crappy roads?

My Dart had a clunk/thump noise from the front when it was new. Before taking it in, I did a quick check to make sure it wasn't something dumb and obvious. It was. The cover for the fuse box have been installed all cock-eyed and wasn't latched properly. The funniest thing was that the QC mark to show that it was checked wasn't even close to lined up anymore when I reinstalled it properly. So it could be something that stupid. Or it could be something bad, though I would think if it was that it would have progressed to something worse by now.

Overall, the Dart is not really a very refined car. It doesn't handle bad road surfaces gracefully or quietly, and "extra noises" are sort of its calling card. I personally like how it feels, but it's definitely not for everybody.

People think I'm weird when I comment that I would like my Dart to ride even stiffer than it does. I'd love it if I could afford something like BC coilovers, although I think even at their highest setting they lower the ride height, which could be a problem. I'd like a solution that increased stiffness but didn't lower the car.

Front (and rear) end clunk... hmmm lets see: every car i ever owned had some "clunk" on rough roads or uneven surfaces etc etc. We're talking 2004 Mazda 3s, 2007 Fusion SEL V6, 2010 Focus SE, 2012 Mazda 3s... On truly smooth asphalt i dont hear a peep from my low profile 18's all seasons..which right now are Continental "SureContact"s

Well, I guess it is what it is. Appreciate the feedback from everyone. It's not terrible. Yes it's a noisy car. It does many other things very well.

It leaks fluids from various places like an absolute boss, that's for sure.

I would jack it up and find the noise myself in which ramps really help. Larger tires did help quite a bit....

I've slammed cars by using $50 eBay coilovers sleeves, cut springs (not my own), and did some really stupid things in my day, but my dart doesn't ride that bad despite what it's been through - a car that keeps up with me? Hell yeah! I do however wish the springs were as loose as my old 2.0 Rallye.

You might even learn a bit about why/where the issue is by simply doing your own alignment, or even pretending to do so. There plenty of guides online especially in the offroading community that will give you a good idea of where to start.
I strongly recommend not attempting to align or check a car loaded....I lost half a day to a car that pulled hard to the right the next day on my way to work (I wasn't about to test drive that while ripped). Good laugh, but fixed it in 30 minutes sober at the end of the day.

Disclaimer: it's my birthday, I say what I want and have a really bad cold!

I had noises from aftermarket front brake pads moving around in calipers. Press brake pedal slightly when going over bumps, if noise goes away it's coming from brakes.

There is issues with some of the older Darts with the calipers moving around. Fix is- new calipers. The CV joints are a known culprit as well. I recommend giving the car a bounce test to rule out the struts and check everything over.
