Manual Transmission Question for the 2.4

Hey Everyone, new member to these forums. I just bought a 2016 Dart GT with the manual transmission/11,000 miles and had a question you guys might be able to help me with as I have 5 days left to determine if I want to keep this vehicle.

When I shift into 3rd, 4th or 5th gear and hit the gas the RPMs rev up similar to an automatic transmission. For example, I am doing 30mph in 4th gear and hit the gas, the RPM might rev up to 5000rpm after i've already let off the clutch then taper off down to 3000rpm. Is this normal on new manual vehicles? I know in the past on manual vehicles I've driven and I hammer the gas the rpm locks in relative to my speed. I just want to make sure the gears aren't stripped in this car or that I don't strip the gears by doing this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated =)

Edit: Still trying to determine what's going on but seems like the clutch is slipping. Not sure how bad that is though...

It may be the CDV, clutch delay valve. There is a CDV delete available from Deyeme racing.

I don't have a manual trans, just going with what I have read here.
11k miles is very low mileage for a clutch to be slipping. Any possibility to have a mechanic check it out?

Thanks for the response. It definitely seems odd that it would happen at 11k miles. There is a youtube video of a clutch slipping youtube.com/watch?v=rgGlB8yGXr0 . I can already be engaged in a gear and hit the gas but as the rpms shoot up they don't correlate with the speed.

It really depends on how long it takes in a way to level out. The CDV sucks horribly and what happens is the valve will 'bounce' IE the ball in the valve won't open all the way once you let off the clutch, causing this kind of thing but TBH I have never experienced it the way you are explaining it. It's more of like the RPMs work out for the most part, but the car 'jumps' between gears (IE, you let go of the clutch, the valve bounces 'open', you press more on the gas because you are expecting the clutch to have already caught completely, however then it jars the car because the ball bounces back open properly.)

I just took it for a drive and going up hill in 5th gear at 52mph I was losing speed while the RPMs were climbing.

The slave cylinder probably leaked and contaminated the clutch. Whoever replaced the slave cylinder should have replaced the clutch as long as they had the trans pulled. The manual trans hydraulic components are minimal endurance, not well engineered, and therefore a fairly common problem.
The other thing to consider is the 2.4L engines oil consumption issues. Do some searching here on the forum. If it has the 8.4 touchscreen, that is yet another troublesome component.
Since you have 5 days and unless you are your own mechanic and really like the Dart, you may want to keep looking. The 2.0 engine and the 6 speed auto trans make for a fairly reliable alternative if you are set on owning a Dart. I have two Darts and have yet to have any problems.

I fully agree with this. The uconnect can have problems but that's negligible compared to clutch parts. To the OP unless it's basically free, I wouldn't touch this car

Let me start off my saying: RUN!

I purchased my 2015 GT 2.4, 5 spd, w/19k miles on it and the clutch began slipping a year later. The exact same symptom as you described. The flywheel alone is almost $500, and the clutch kit doesn’t even include the throwout bearing (another $200). Pretty sure the previous owner learned how to drive stick on it and turned it in. Additionally, I was unaware that the dart had a CDV, which for anyone who knows how to drive a manual, only adds additional and unnecessary wear and tear. Long story short, I went online to Modern Performance for parts, and even with them being a fraction of the dealership’s cost, came out to around $1200. I upgraded my clutch to Clutchmasters FX100, replaced the dual mass flywheel with the OEM, as well as throwout bearing, and CDV delete. Save yourself a HUGE headache and look somewhere else. Hope I got to ya before you make a regretful decision...

Bet who had it before doesn't know how to drive clutch, rode the clutch between shifts instead of full release the clutch pedal and smoked both clutch and flywheel.
