Ground Wires - My thoughts after installation

Does your Dart suffer from the following problems?

      1) Touchscreen whiteouts, blackouts, reboots, locking up.
      2) Rough idle, lots of vibrations.
      3) Dimming headlights.
      4) Idle drop when using power windows.
      5) Sluggish engine

All of these problems were solved with a simple ground wire upgrade. I do not know all the OEM ground locations, however I do know that there is one on the drivers side inside the engine bay. The problem is that this nut and bolt is covered with paint, which does not make a good connection AT ALL. Due to this horrible ground, you will see some or all of the symptoms I listed above. The most common will be the touchscreen faults and rough idle.

After reading @youngsmith53 build journal and seeing the success he had with upgraded grounds, I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately my local hardware stores did not have any ground wires in stock. So ultimately I ended up going to O'Reilly Auto Parts, and bought a battery cable with ring terminals already attached. It was 4 gauge, 12 inches in length for $6. Yes, a $6 part fixed all these problems that FCA should have addressed when they built the vehicles. I simply connected it from the negative battery terminal to the fuse box mount inside the engine bay.

I turned the Dart on, and immediately to my surprise almost all the idle vibrations were gone. I turned my headlights on, no drop in idle. I used my power windows, no drop in idle. I went for a drive, the engine felt smooth and overall just a tad bit faster. All of this with just ONE ground wire. I plan to add 2 or 3 more grounds once I have more time in my garage.

Thanks for the tip. The ground wasn’t something I even thought about but it makes sense

Nice job. A few questions, when you stated that the Hardware store did not have "ground" wires, were you looking for automotive specific, braided cables or they just did not have the gauge you needed with the proper gas/oil insulation rating? Did you add any steel washers and/or dielectric grease to help connectivity and as a possible rust inhibitor?

Initially I simply went to look for non-automotive 8 gauge that was rated for high temps (200F). Home Depot, Menards, and Ace Hardware did not have them in stock.

OReilly AutoParts has about 10 different lengths available in store. These are battery specific grounds, so they are 4 gauge (bigger than 8 gauge) and rated for high temps/oil/etc. To me this was the best bet, since they are technically battery cables specific for automotive. I added 1 washer at each end of the connection and just a tad bit of dielectric grease.

Thank you. This will be my next project after I finish fixing my cracked engine cover. Also, thanks to @youngsmith53 (once again) for his comprehensive build thread.

I went with the 1ft length for battery ground terminal to fuse box terminal. It was a bit too long but I just bent it into place. Edit - uploaded picture

I forgot the exact lengths, you can find them in YoungSmiths build thread. I don't recall off the top of my head, as I haven't completed those on my Dart yet.
