@Mopar_Misfit - Thanks for the advise re: Mopar filter. Of the 4 stores I went to, only the last, Advance Auto Parts had one they showed as compatible - the Purolator. I've used many Purolators on other cars but since this car was bought new and I was surprised at how much the Purolator was I'm thinking I'll take it back and hit the dealer for a Mopar OEM. @Pretty Boy Floyd - You stated "The spec'd oil for our engines is very good". As I said, on the back of the Mobil1 it states: Gasoline Engines: Mobil1 Turbo Diesel Truck... exceeds API SN. So is this good for the 1.4L Turbo? My Owners Manual page 529 advises to use a oils that are API certified, do you think this stuff is OK?
@perry25 - just to be clear, over 98K miles on your 2013 1.4L Dart? That's a lot of driving! Thanks for the testament...

Funny how there is ALWAYS plenty of discussion re: pro's and con's of oil types - whether it's here or my motorcycle list I belong to. Being my first NEW car in some time and my first turbo, I just don't want to screw things up! Thanks again everyone...!

Hey both Mobil 1 and Rotella To are "mixed fleet" oils. That means they meet the certification for both gas and diesel engines. However to meet the diesel requirements it contains additives and detergents not needed in a gas motor. Chrysler tells us at the dealer level not to use the 5w40 Rotella in gas engines, to use 5w40 euro.

But again that's what's great about cars, we can make our own decisions as to what's best. .

Oil technology has advanced greatly, especially in the last couple of decades. Engine builders have come to rely on cutting-edge oils to make their designs work properly. Diesel oil that specifically states it meets API SN is probably ok, but the detergents and additives are going to be optimized for diesel engines.

SN oil does not have be as good as ACEA A3/B4 Autobahn rated oil. MB 229.5 and VW 502 are also top ratings for oil. The oil spec'd for our Dart 1.4T has all four of these ratings:

Just to see what they would say I sent a email to shell tech to ask them:

      10:20 PM (10 hours ago)
Should 5w40 Rotella full synthetic be used in a 1.4l turbo gas engine?

      to me
We do not recommend Using Rotella oils in gasoline engines with catalytic converters.

      Best Regards,

      Shell Technical

Just to make sure we have as much information as possible.

They tell you that because they have a deal with Pennzoil. Money makes all the business decisions in this world.

There are people with Fiat's, EVO's, Subi's, Porsches, etc using this oil. They swear by it. Never any issues.

Pennzoil is part of Shell Oil Products US and is ultimately a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell. I believe the 2014 and 2015 Dart owners manuals specifically recommend both Pennzoil Platinum Ultra and Shell Helix by name for the 1.4T.

The manual for the 13 doesn't make specific mention. Its the same motor both years isn't it? If one manual says one thing and the 14 and 15 says otherwise. Wouldnt both be fine? I've used rotella t6 mobile 0w40 and now the Pennzoil ultra. Car does the same. They recommend euro cause of the low ash. Still trying to get data sheet for rotella and Mobil to see how they compare. Other than that, what's the difference?

Nice assumption however Pennzoil is part of shell. All Mopar brand oil is Pennzoil or Rotella. Money does make the world go round, that being said if that was the bases of their answer I think they replied the opposite. They would much prefer me sell the Rotella oil because they charge me more for it over the Pennzoil.

But i'm not here to try to persuade you to use a different oil that you are not getting from me anyway. I just providing information, "free" information.

      Everyone have a great day!
