      uConnect Radio Limitations?

I posted this in another thread but it seems to have been overlooked, so I figured I'd give it it's own thread so that a remotely tech-savvy individual here may see it and run the tests.

I read somewhere that the SD card limit is capped at 32 GB for these radios. However, I've seen comments about these radios only being able to recognize a finite number of tracks, regardless of whether the 32 GB has been reached or not. It was a very round number but I can't remember it, let's assume it's 5,000 tracks though. This would mean only the first 5,000 tracks that it reads (alphabetically) will be recognized.

I've also heard that it has to process and catalog the entire SD card everytime the car is started, which in the case of a 32 GB card would take a while. However, the music on the SD card would start playing from the first track (alphabetically) if SD mode is selected on the radio. You just can't browse the contents of your SD card until it is done reading it. This would also make keeping more than one SD card in the center console and swapping them depending on how you have your music stored and organized a pain because you'd have to wait for it to read the card before having access to it.

I was wondering if it was a software issue that could be remedied in the future and that the Dart possibly ships with software that corrects the issue (if it even exists). These issues were reported on Chargers specifically, although Journeys and 300's would have them as well. I was hoping one of you enthusiastic Dart owners would mind running this radio through its paces, even possibly with a USB thumb drive to see what's what. Also, somebody with a large capacity Ipod (something larger than 60 GB) since I have an old 160 GB classic iPod that I was thinking about leaving in the center console, could possibly check and see how that functions? I'd assume the iPod may perform better if most of the work is being done on Apple's side, but I'm not sure yet.

Finally, there was some discussion regarding album artwork issues people were having, so if somebody could see if embedded artwork shows up on the screen for SD and USB music, or if a particular image file (i.e. JPEG, PNG, etc.) needs to be stored in the album folder. Because folder hierarchy and organization can vary GREATLY from person to person, I'd assume it uses embedded art but am not sure. I understand that there is the GraceNote database that can pull information like that, since there is a music cleanup function in the radio's settings, but people have complained about its accuracy, and I'm sure there's plenty of albums that aren't listed in their database anyways. I'm also wondering if artwork from an iPod can be sent through the cable and to the screen.

I understand there's always the 3.5mm jack that I can use but that would involve paying attention to and controlling an additional device while driving which isn't optimal. I figured there's bound to be at least one person here that's interested in what their fancy 8 inch radio is really capable of, not the "on the surface" features that are spun in a certain way to get the technologically interested but not quite fluent to want the feature. Thanks again.

I don't think there is a problem with a 160GB iPod. Since it reads from the device and then plays the music. As for the SD card. I think the limit depends on the card. I have a 16GB SD card in the reader and it has no problem.

When the kids go to bed I'll see if I can annoy my wife and go sit in my car with my iPhone plugged in. I read where if you use the apple cable you can control from uConnect screen, but I haven't tried it.

edit: thanks bamette! did this one on my phone and didn't catch that!

Ok, plugged my iPhone in the USB. Won't show much about how it handles a big library as I only have about 500 songs on my phone. It did take the system maybe 30 seconds to "think" about the library before it would let me browse, but it did almost instantly give me an alphabetical song list. Once the browse button became active all your normal iPod controls were right on the 8.4 uConnect screen. It IS possible to have your phone/ipod plugged in with the USB and for your car to still be talking to it over bluetooth, you would have to select the USB first. I did unplug it and turn off the car and plug it back in to see if it would have to re-read everything and doing it with just about 10 seconds break it did NOT have to reload all the info, "browse" function was immediately available as was all the album, song and search information.

I am pretty sure that I could not use the browse function and all the iPod controls while using bluetooth. I didn't think to try it tonight but IIRC I've tried it before and it won't do it over bluetooth.

I don't have an SD card handy so I couldn't play with that. There is a thread on here somewhere called "16GB of music added in minutes" (or something like that) he would be able to tell you how that interface worked out.

I have thought about getting an iPod to be kept in my car. If you were to use an iPod touch you could also use it for those Car Tracking programs and your music as well....
I'll be back in a minute, I need to go buy an iPod touch lol.

If you have a large amount of songs on your ipod it might take a while... took about 10 minutes for the library to compile and I have a little over 10K songs on mine.

Does your MUCH bigger library have to be "re-compiled" every time you start up or is it johnny on the spot?
