If you are going to spend that much on Synthetic flip a couple more dollars for AMSOIL. It is the best synthetic oil on the market. Nothing can compare. RP while a great synthetic still can't compete with it. Mobil 1, Penzoil, Castrol, same thing; great but no comparison. There's synthetics and then there is AMSOIL.
Don't take my word for it though, do some research and find out for yourself
Rotella T-6, Pennzoil ultra(factory fill for Ferrari and SRT, also recommended by the OM) both Shell lubricants are excellent for turbo cars. If its good enough for Ferrari and SRT its good enough for my cars.
Yeah thats why I stopped using AMSOIL and RP because of the price. I went to back Mobil 1 for all of my cars a few years back. I havent tried any of the shell products and I might have to one of these days because I keep hearing good stuff about them. But im a little bias to Mobil 1 products!
But in all seriousness the vast majority of engine damage/wear happens at startup so just keep it topped off/clean with the recommended oil and your engine will be fine for a long time.
I've never heard of an oil-related engine failure outside of collapsed filter, clogged filter, someone not checking the oil when they should in an engine that burns it, or turbo bearings cooking the oil because of improper cooldown(which the 1.4 takes care of for us).
My grandfather puts a couple spoonfulls of bacon grease in his mower when he changes the oil because he said it leaks out of the crankcase seal if he doesn't. If that riding mower from the 70s is still mowing every weekend with golden state(he bought like 3 cases of the stuff on closeout in the 80s) and bacon fat I'm sure a modern engine will be fine using whatever comes recommended off the shelf.
im using royal purple. amsoil oil does not recomend using it in our cars. was having a hard time finding oil because its not updated in most stores at that time. I had nappa call amsoil and they said not to use it .im sure we can use it .but they just have all the specs at that time.
I use Royale Purple in the long term areas, transmission and rear end, for my cars. Engine oil gets removed way to early in most cases anyway, so I've never seen the benefit of using the super expensive stuff. Currently use 0w40 Mobile 1 full syn in my Challenger R/T, 10,000 mile change intervals. Tested oil with Blackstone Labs and I could stretch it further than 10,000 and consitently still have some life left in the mobile 1. Don't forget to get a good oil filter to match.
I highly suggest whatever you use collect a sample with Blackstone lab's kit and have it tested at your normal interval and see how the oil is doing. Then extend your interval and repeat till you're as far as you can comfortably go.
I don't understand why Chrysler is so strict on the oil. I had an 84 Turbo New Yorker and just used top of the line Quaker State regular (non-synth) 10-40 and changed it every 5k. It was still running great at 187k although the driver's door hinges hadn't made it that long. Does the oil for the hydraulic multi-air come from the crankcase? Is it just that the 1.4 is running at higher RPM than my old 2.2T?
RP is great oil, but like most know AMS is the best. I went with AMS 200 miles ago and it feels much smoother and the engine sounds much quieter. I'm happy!
I run Royal Purple in my Focus with a Supercharger that might as well be a heat sink.
