      catch can question

So I was helping a buddy work on his 2.0 dart. This far the only mods he has are an injen cai and now we put a strut tower bar on. While putting the strut tower bar on we took off the top tube of his intake just to make it a bit easier. While doing this we noticed that there was some, what looked like road grime, in the tube and it pretty much started where the breather tube is attached.

If we install a catch can in the normal spot, between the pcv valve and intake manifold, will that help keep this stuff out of his intake?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I haven't really used catch cans in the past and neither has he, so we have no experience here.

@ntheys it would help. I suggest you search the forums here and read up on the many catch cans that people have had experience with. I would suggest no catch cans with any sort of medium (steel wool) I also have a 2.0 and a 2.4 and have catch cans on both.

I agree with @clolarte ... catch cans will definitely help keep a decent amount of oil out of your intake! Also, you can use a medium in certain catch cans as long as you are willing to keep an eye on it and even change it out every or every other oil change. I have had a medium in my catch can and havent had any issues thus far... but I do swap the stainless steel scrub pad I use every other oil change! BUT to be safe, try getting a catch can that doesnt need a medium or come with a medium to function properly.

Ok, will definitely tell him to get a catch can then. So then my next question. If I put it on the line between the pcv valve and the manifold, will that be enough to get rid of the oil going to the intake? Or, would I need to put another can between the valve cover and the intake? Just don't know how all of that flows through the head and vavle cover. I just want to make sure that we can get rid of it, I cleaned some nasty stuff out of his intake and we don't want to ruin anything with his engine.

Thank you for the info this far.

Ok so my buddy got paid and wants to move forward with putting in a catch can, so will one catch can installed between the pcv valve and the manifold eliminate the oil going into the intake, or would we have to put one on the line that runs from the valve cover to the intake as well?

I mean you can run both... but from what I have seen, the catch between the PCV and intake manifold will prevent oil from getting into the intake... You will see extremely minimal amounts in the intake still, but nothing compared to what it was without one! Now you also have a 2.0 so the engine may run differently than the 1.4T @youngsmith53 ... where is your catch can attached?
