This is a discussion on Octane rating within the Dodge Dart 1.4L MultiAir Turbo forums, part of the Dodge Dart Garage - The Mopar Zone category; The manual recommends 91 octane, but the 1.4L will run on 87. Does the performance and economy really increase with 91 vs 87 octane?...

Yes it does improve. Think about it, Chrysler doesn't make more money if you buy 91 over 87, they couldn't care less about the cost portion of fuel. They reccommend it for a reason. Better mpgs and better performance. Get the 91.

Your engine will also last longer, and have less problems if you use whats recommended.

I read somewhere that to achieve the full 160 HP in the 1.4 Turbo you needed the 91 octane rated fuel. The difference in price isn't bad, I think, but the prices at my local garage have just gone up again . I just checked, and the current difference is 34 cents per gallon, about 5 dollars more per fill up over regular. I also think your mpg's increase with the 91 octane, but I'm not sure how much. As they say, "You pays your money and takes your choice." Frankly, if I were going to pay the money for the Turbo, I'd want all the performance it could give me.

With any turbo its usually recommended to use the higher octane. Also if you like your car stay away from Arco.....i usually tell my customers to use cheveron at least every 3rd or 4th fill-up because that tecron does work...

I would also suggest 92 non-ethanol aka clear gas. i spent 100.00 filling my truck up with it I got better mileage and my idol timing was better. if i fill up with ethonal reg or super and did my normal running around i was at a half a tank that day I'm just now getting to half a tank and payday was last wednesday. yes the 92 clear costs more but it's worth it in the long run. if you can find a chevron that has it the company that sells the clear is Sunoco.
