      possible turbo swap????

currently doing some research right now for possible turbo swaps.. came across a td04 out of a 2.8 v6 saab while at work fixing a coolant line on the car... trying to find actual specs on the turbo. but from just looking at the setup, it's not really very different from how our factory garrets mount in I.e. locations of wastegate, dv, cooling lines, inlets and outlets etc just a little larger... hoping someone might chime in before I go purchasing one and start playing around!

As far as most of us know there is only one turbo that has been used on the darts and abarths as a 1 for 1 swap...

I know not whether the saab's turbo will work either but depending on how much time and money you want to put in, im sure it may be possible! Also remember bigger turbo DOES NOT always equal MOAR POWAH

The GT1752S is probably the best option. If my stock turbo fails, that's what I'll be doing.

Thing you gotta remember about Saab, they used a small turbo with a bigger engine. The engine displacement gave you a decent low-end grunt, and a small turbo spun up quickly and filled out the power curve. This is how, for instance, my 1991 9000 Turbo (2.3, 15+ lbs of boost from the factory and >10:1 compression buuuuut a smaller turbo than the 2.0) hit peak torque at only like 1800 RPMs.

(Well, okay, this is leaving out the early ones- they were a whole different beast, but back then nobody really knew much about turbocharging cars anyway!)

what I was figuring. just want sure of the turbos specs as to how much lag there would be, and if it would be worth the time. if the ratios in the turbo were aggressive enough it could be worth the hassle. as many engines are coupled with a variation of the td04. just an idea. I'm not liking the cost vs gains of the current drop in turbo upgrades currently available. but then again I'm coming from last generations setups and head designs with larger displacements. the only other option I've been considering is saving my pennies a little longer and start gathering up the parts to go to a twin scroll setup. call the guys at hybrid turbos and see what kind of frakenturbo they can dr up, fab a manifold, piping etc. then see if someone can tune it up for me. my goal is to reliably hit the 300 tq mark without winding out a small turbo constantly. but maybe I'm just letting my mechanical imagination get away from me haha.

(I thoroughly enjoy building in my mind, slapping my ideas to paper then cranking in the shop to see just how far I can take my ideas to reality)

another thought.... I see we can no longer buy back from torq.. every time I try to load the site nothing is even listed for the dart anymore... was going to order the forged pistons and rods.. think I might call the guys at scat and see what it would take to make me a rotating assembly for the 1.4. maybe see if can squeeze a .030 over out of this and shorten the rod length a little. they did a great job on the set for my mud truck and she's been hammering string for 4 years now.

(I have a feeling I'm going to get myself into trouble, but hey.. someone's gotta try it right! I squeezed almost 700hp out of an 04 lightning on a stock bottom end before throwing a rod.. lesson learned the hard and expensive way ha. I say let's see what this thing can do. worst case I blow it up and get another motor

The 1.4 has forged internals... tork was just selling "better" ones.

good to know. that is a plus. anyone know where i can find actual engine specs and dimensions?

never mind I found them. bore x stroke is 72mm x 84mm and c/r of 9:8:1.. definitely need to do something about that.. tiny bore, stroke is decent but could be a little less for better response and revs, and c/r should be down around 8:1 or 8:5:1 so we can cram some more volume to her, some port and polish on the head coupled with little more turbo and fuel and we have ourselves an achievable 300 mark.

Uh, keep the stroke where it is- that's where your torque comes from. Bore, sure, but I don't think I'd reduce the CR, if you're building something that can squirt enough go-juice in there to keep it fed. Play with the advance to control that.

The 2.3 Saab turbo engine I mentioned earlier? 93mm x 93mm, bore x stroke. With no mods other than a K&N filter, I put it on a dyno at ~110k miles, and it was putting down 235 whp and ~255 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. It hit peak torque below 2000 RPM. Sure, a short stroke and short intake runners will rev you quick and get you on boost faster, but longer runners and longer stroke will get you low-end torque that's usable right off the line, so you won't notice the lag as much.

I dont think so, you also have to fight the multiair system... which is the halting point and why no one has broken into 300HP.
