New Product: PF1RMM: solid polyurethane-filled rear engine mount!

I've been working all weekend on getting the rear drivetrain mount (technically "isolator") prototyped. The design of the mount is fairly conventional, but in order to build it up properly, I had to make a split-open one-piece mold for it. That's a first for us, but I think the part that results is superior to a one-piece mold.

The reason for changing this mount, like any other, is that the OEM mount is a compromise between performance and NVH (noise/vibration/harshness). Basically, if you make a car that performs really well (no wheel hop, no missed shifts, firm shift feel), then you'll get all the car mag whiners (er, I mean critics) crying about how you can feel or hear the engine or the road. That's why cars come with all-season tires, wimpy anti-sway bars, soft springs, etc. Drivetrain mounts are another one of those compromise items. This particular mount does not hold the weight of the drivetrain at rest; it is meant to keep the engine from bobbling, or attempting to rotate on its axis, during changes in load.

Here's an OEM rear mount for the Dart, next to ours. I made the first one in lime to show off the shape, and to match (as closely as possible) our own Citrus Peel Rallye.

The center thru-bolt hole is held to the body of the mount by two rubber "legs". This design allows for quite a bit of movement when the engine bobbles, like when you shift gears, or when trying to launch aggressively. Ours, on the other hand, allows for very little movement, but without the harshness of a solid metal mount or a hard plastic insert.

They're available on our website now!

How hard are engine mounts to change out? I need some red ones.

It would seem that one could change them one at a time and never have to support the whole engine?

The rear mount- the one we have available now- does not hold the weight of the drivetrain at rest, so it can be changed without supporting the engine. It's not very complicated. I have a bunch of installation pictures done, and will try to have the instructional write-up done this afternoon.

When doing the side mounts, you would want to support either the engine or transmission (the side you're working on), and remove one of the mounting bolts of the rear mount, to allow enough movement to align the new mount for installation.

    Remove undercarriage splash shield

    remove downpipe nuts

    remove p-clamp holding exhaust pipe

remove rear engine mount-to-bracket bolt and nut.

remove three mount bracket bolts and slide bracket down and out.

remove mount thru-bolt, and leave nut with tab in place.

Done! Stick the new mount in place of the old one, and reverse the steps to put it all back together.

There are three total. An engine mount, on the passenger side; a transaxle mount, located on the driver's side, and the rear isolator, located about in the middle, near the bottom of the firewall. Right now, the rear isolator (pictured above) is the only one we're selling. We're still working on making workable molds for the side mounts, which have a very complex design. Truly, works of modern art. Or engineers on drugs. Can't tell the difference.

We'll have pics as soon as get them made.

Got it put in today. Learned that the next addition to my growing toolbox will be some ratchets with LONGER handles. That extra torque made all the difference getting the three bracket bolts off. (I tried to do it last night in my garage and couldn't get them off, went to dad's today) Also those ratcheting box wrenches are awesome for that tight squeeze.

Made a HUGE difference when shifting! Before, every now and again (quite a bit actually I think) when going into a new gear you could feel it hit and THEN push into gear. Almost like two "clicks". You hit the wall, the old mount would give, you push the trans a bit until it stops and then you got your gear. Now, you just get your gear. Bam, no hesitation, no motor movement.

In my opinion, if you have a 6 speed, then you want one of these.

Glad you like it. The 1st gen Neon, and the Stratus Coupe both suffered from this for the same reason. The side mounts hold the weight, but they don't keep the drivetrain from trying to rotate on its axis. In the Dart, it's just that one lonely isolator. Having removed your old one, you can probably see why the shifting was so sloppy!
